Brain Injury and the Mind

Brain

Brain

The Brain and the Mind are/is such interesting organ and creation.  One cannot exist without the other, being the same thing, but they are vastly different.

On October 31st of this year, 2009, my best friend here in Seattle had to have an Abscess removed from the left hemisphere of his brain, then developed more Abscesses deeper and more widespread throughout the left hemisphere.

He started off paralyzed on his r ight side after surgery to remove the first Abscess, lost his power of speech, reasoning and comprehension.  His brain swollen from infection and surgery, the surgeons had to remove the top of his skull.  Mood swings, unrelenting to authority figures (although, that may have been a remnant of his prior personality) and a disregard for rules.

Over five weeks he was in Neuro-Intensive-Care and dowgraded to a semi-secure floor for the brain-injured.  He continued to make good progress, regaining the use of his right side (later to say it felt like a  stroke, becasue his right arm was numb and always surprised him when he saw it), regaining power of speech and reasoning skills.

The brain is an amazing organ, alright.  It’s ability to function with such dire circumstances happening to it.  He still has the Abscesses running through the left hemisphere (being reduced slowly with some of the most powerful antibiotics known to man) and is still making remarkable progress.
